As Burundi is a member of COMIFAC it benefits from the approved sub-regional strategy and the ABS capacity building inputs to GTBAC, the Central African Working Group on Biodiversity, which meets several times a year. Together with the provisions of the international regime on ABS this strategy will provide the framework for national regulations in the countries of the region.

The ABS Initiative held a preparatory meeting in Burundi for the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity for African representatives from indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs). IPLCs were also the target group of training on ABS and intellectual property rights (IPRs).
