Sub-regional Workshop on ABS for the West and Central African Regions
3-7 September 2007, Douala, Cameroon
Participants were introduced to ABS on the national and international scales, defined key issues of ABS relevant to the member countries of the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC) and formulated a road map for future activities.
- Participants better understood ABS and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
- Based on the existing context in the COMIFAC region participants defined next steps and priorities in ABS implementation. Participants defined points essential for developing a joint African position at the 5th ABS Working Group in Montreal in October 2007
- Participants formulated a road map for future activities for the Working Group on Biodiversity in Central Africa (GTBAC)
In an official announcement, the participants presented recommendations, e. g. to build the capacity of institutions and people in charge of ABS, to consider ABS in the budget of the COMIFAC and to execute a comparative study on bioprospection in COMIFAC member countries.
Fifty-six representatives from all Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC) member countries participated at the workshop. They were accompanied by representatives from the ABS Initiative, the GTZ (now: GIZ), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) and representatives from national and international NGOs.
The event was organized by GTBAC with support of the ABS Initiative.
