Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC)

The ABS Initiative successfully supported the development of a regional ABS strategy in the context of the GIZ implemented COMIFAC Support Programme and is now backstopping the translation of the regional strategy into national ABS implementation in the ten member countries.

A preparation mission for a new ABS component of the GIZ implemented project in support of the COMIFAC was conducted in June 2013 by the Initiative. This component started in 2014 and will provide regional capacity development and technical support to the COMIFAC countries for national implementation. More in-depth capacity development is planned in three partner countries still to be determined. Activities will include outreach, training, developing legal and institutional frameworks and establishing partnerships with the research and private sector.

Furthermore, the ABS Initiative continued to provide technical input to the meetings of the Central African Working Group on Biodiversity (GTBAC).
