Traditional Knowledge, Intellectual Property Rights and ABS for Indigenous and Local Communities

23-27 September 2013, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Representatives from indigenous and local communities (ILCs) were trained in ABS as it relates to traditional knowledge (TK) and on how intellectual property rights (IPRs) are linked to ABS. Biocultural Community Protocols (BCPs) were presented as a methodology to document TK and to access the emerging legislation.

The training provided enough time and space for practical exercise, in particular on negotiation skills relevant to IPR and BCPs. The training was also an opportunity for dialogue where ILCs discussed and shared concrete practical experience on the interface between IPRs and ABS.
