Morocco hosted a sub-regional and the 5th Pan-African ABS Workshop organized by the ABS Initiative in support of a national ABS roadmap. Based on the results and with further national support, GIZ implements the bilateral project ACCN (Adaptation to climate change - implementing the Nagoya Protocol) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). This project comprises the development of a legal and institutional framework as well as ABS compliant value chains in two pilot regions, Souss Massa Drâa and Tadla-Azilal. The ABS Initiative held consultative meetings with research institutions and private sector representatives involved in the utilization of Argan products in order to better understand their perspectives and interests. The ABS Initiative exchanges these kinds of ABS experiences with other countries through regional platforms, such as SILVAMED.
Argan is one of three African cases appearing in the 20-minute film People, Plants and Profits. The film illustrates the basic principles of ABS in the context of the Nagoya Protocol.
