Regional ABS Workshop for Francophone African Countries
19-23 November 2007, Marrakesh, Morocco
Stakeholders exchanged experiences with bioprospecting and developed a roadmap for further ABS activities in the region.
Various issues were addressed within several working groups, including the concepts of genetic and biological resources, protected areas and ABS, legal frameworks for ABS and the development of national Clearing House Mechanisms.
The workshop facilitated the exchange of experiences among stakeholders on bioprospecting cases in order to establish a comprehensive database of best-practice examples.
A roadmap for further activities on ABS in the region was developed, envisaging intensified communication on ABS, negotiation skills development for African delegates, the establishment of an inventory for traditional knowledge and the further development of ABS legislation in the region.
The event was attended by 56 participants from Francophone Africa as well as experts from the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL) and the Montpellier School of Agricultural and Life Sciences (ENSA). The participants represented relevant national authorities, civil society organisations and national research institutions.
The workshop was organised in cooperation with the Moroccan government, Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) and the Institut de l’Energie et de l’Environnement de la Francophonie (IEPF).
