Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC) Working Group on Biological Diversity
5-7 December 2006, São Tomé, São Tomé and Príncipe
During the founding workshop of the COMIFAC Working Group on Biological Diversity, member states established the basis for a common political approach towards ABS in Central Africa.
COMIFAC established this working group in the light of the intensified activities in the field of biodiversity in the region. COMIFAC member state representatives and relevant partners in development (bilateral organisations, NGOs) began the process of elaborating a common political approach towards ABS in Central Africa.
COMIFAC, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the French cooperation (represented by CBFP – Congo Basin Forest Partnership and the French-German COMIFAC support Office in Yaoundé, Cameroon) agreed to jointly support this process.
Participants took stock of ABS implementation in Central Africa, discussed the status quo of scientific coverage of the subregion’s biodiversity and possibilities of its valorisation along with strategies for acquisition of funding.
