The Secretariat of the ABS Capacity Development Initiative is based at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in the town of Eschborn, not far from Frankfurt am Main.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is both host and a major donor of the ABS Initiative.

The Initiative also participates in the roundtable on ABS hosted by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety.

In 2009, the 9th meeting of the Conference of Parties to the CBD (COP-9) took place in Bonn. The ABS Initiative organized two side events.

The ABS Initiative has hosted several events in Germany, namely “Managing Multistakeholder Processes in the ABS Arena” training courses, Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) workshops and workshops on ABS, Protected Areas Management and Forest Governance.

The Initiative cooperates and works closely with German industry on ABS issues, for instance with the German Biotech Industry Organization (DIB), selected pharmaceutical and body care companies and research for development start-ups.
