India actively participates in a dialogue forum organized by the Initiative on practical ways forward for the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol – along with other countries rich in ABS experiences such as South Africa, Malaysia and Mexico.
The 1st General Assembly of the ABS Capacity Development Initiative took place in October 2012, back-to-back with the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP-11) in Hyderabad. This Assembly brought together members of the Steering Committees from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, partners of the ABS Initiative and interested stakeholders.
A capacity building workshop was jointly organized by Bioversity International and the ABS Initiative preceding the June 2012 Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol (ICNP-2) meeting in New Delhi. This was a concrete first step towards common implementation-oriented activities of the Secretariats of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In January 2013, a high level expert meeting followed in Rome, Italy.
A capacity building workshop, jointly organized by the Secretariats of the CBD and the Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) directly preceded the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol (ICNP-2). The ABS initiative was invited to share its methodological capacity development approach on supporting ABS / the Nagoya Protocol implementation in the African, Caribbean and Pacific Regions. A particular focus was given on presenting experiences and lessons leant in the context of executing the UNEP GEF 4 MSP in six African Countries. This workshop was a concrete first step towards common implementation-oriented activities of the Secretariats the CBD and the ITPGRFA. In January 2013, a high level expert meeting on the “International Treaty and the Nagoya Protocol: Mutually Supportive Implementation, co-organized with the ABS Initiative followed in Rome, Italy.
In Hyderabad, the ABS Initiative, in close collaboration with the AU Commission, organized coordination meetings for the African Group prior to both ICNP-2 and COP-11.
