Fiji was host to the 1st Pacific ABS Workshop in 2012 and again hosted the 4th Pacific ABS Workshop in 2013. While the first workshop focused on identifying and mapping the ABS related capacity development needs and how to address them, the focus of the second workshop was on supporting ratification and the first steps of national level implementation of the Nagoya Protocol.
Fiji also hosted the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme (BIOPAMA) Inception Workshop for the Pacific in 2013. At this event, a representative of the ABS Initiative presented the ABS component of the EU funded BIOPAMA project. The workshop highlighted the potential of ABS as a funding mechanism for protected areas. Possibilities for collaboration between the ABS and protected area components of BIOPAMA were also explored.
In the same year, back-to-back with the 4th Pacific ABS Workshop in Suva, the ABS Initiative organized the second meeting of the Pacific Steering Committee.
