Vanuatu is preparing to ratify the Nagoya Protocol. The basis for their regulatory ABS framework is the Environmental Management and Conservation Act of 2002. In order to better understand the state-of-the-art of ABS in Vanuatu and to brief stakeholders, the ABS Initiative prepared a descriptive analysis of four bioprospecting cases in the Pacific region (one of which occurred in Vanuatu) with parallel funding support from the Australian Government.
In collaboration with the United Nations University's Institute of Advanced Studies and the Australian University of New South Wales and jointly with a representative of the GEF Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), the ABS Initiative held meetings with government authorities and NGOs in March and November 2012 in order to promote ratification of the Nagoya Protocol and to identify support needs. As a result, the Vanuatu NGO Network started to prepare a proposal to the GEF SGP for ABS awareness raising at the community level. This was approved in mid-2013 and will be implemented in close collaboration with the ABS Initiative.
